英検二級の作文を添削してみましょう。
みなさんも、文を読みながら、まず「ここが違うと思う｣という所を探してみてください。添削するという行為は、深く英語を考察するという事につながりますので、とても良い勉強になります。
前回のものとお題は同じですが、意見が違うパターンです。
お題
８０－１００語で述べよ。
Do you think more people will spend a lot of money on their pets in the future?
（将来、より多くの人がペットに沢山のお金をかけるようになると思いますか？）
解答例（添削前のもの）
I think more people will do so in the future. I have two reasons.
First, they will increase that don't get married.They have pets for they conceal the loneliness. pet give healing to us.
Second, pet's clothes is very cute. Recently pet's clothes looking like person's clothes. Skirts, shoes, socks, hat and so on.
For these reasons I think more people wil do so in the future. (67語）
文法的に訂正を入れるべきところが散見しますが、主張は分かりやすいですね。二番目の理由は少し話の持って行き方を考えたほうが良いでしょう。では、構成と文法をみていきます。

【文法】
I think more people will do so in the future. I have two reasons.
①First, they will increase that don't get married.
②They have pets for they conceal the loneliness.

④Second, pet's clothes is very cute. Recently pet's clothes looking like person's clothes.
⑤Skirts, shoes, socks, hat and so on.
For these reasons I think more people wil do so in the future.

「結婚しない人が増えるだろう｣と言いたいようですが、この形では正しく表現できていません。この手の文は作文でよく使うので形をしっかり覚えましょう。
「～する人々の数が増えていっている｣→The number of people who ~ is increasing.
people に who（関係代名詞）がくっついて説明する形です。
● the number of~ → ～の数
● people who do not marry →結婚する人々
→ the number of people who do not marry
（結婚しない人々の数）
この部分を主語にして、動詞部分( is increasing )をくっつけます
→The number of people who do not marry is increasing.
(結婚しない人の数が増えていっている)
②They have pets for they conceal the loneliness.
「寂しさを紛らわすためにペットを飼う｣という表現でしょうね。
●for の後ろに主語、動詞が来ているので for を接続詞として使っているようですね。その場合 for は because の意味になりますので「彼ら（結婚しない人）はペットを飼う。何故なら彼ら（結婚しない人？彼らのペット達？）は寂しさを隠す（紛らわす）からだ。｣となりますね。「寂しさを紛らわすためにペットを飼う｣という意味にはとれません。そしてそれより何より 二個目のthey が何を指しているのかよく分かりません。このような事態を避けつつシンプルに表すには、ここでは、不定詞で表現すると良いでしょう。
→ to conceal (紛らわすために）
● the loneliness とありますが、one's loneliness
と、所有の表現で使う方が良いでしょう。「その人達自身が所有している寂しさ｣でしょうからね。
→ They have pets to conceal their loneliness.
③ Pets give healing to us.
「ペットは私たちに癒しを与えてくれる｣ この文の形で伝わると思います。ほかの例として
Pets have healing powers. （ペットには癒しの力がある）
Pets make us feel comfortable. （ペットは私達を心地よい気持ちにさせてくれる）
などを使うとこなれた感じになります。
④Second, pet's clothes is very cute. Recently pet's clothes looking like person's clothes. ⑤Skirts, shoes, socks, hat and so on.
●「ペットの服｣は pet clothes と表記されている事が多いですので、こちらにしておきましょう。clothes は複数形として動詞は対応させます。

ちょっと深い話
「可能性はある｣という言い方
ハッキリ言い切るとちょっと語弊があるかな…。という時に使える表現です。
「結婚しない人が、寂しさを紛らわすためにペットを飼う｣とは、言い切れないなあ…。とも思いますよね。そういう時は「彼らが寂しさを紛らわすためにペットを飼うことは大いにありうる｣のようにすると、「結婚しない人はペットを飼う｣と決めつけず可能性を示唆しているだけ、という形になります。
