英検準二級の英作文を添削して、点数アップの方法を考えてみましょう。
【お題】レストランは24時間あいているべきか？
みなさんも、文を読みながら、まず「ここが違うと思う｣という所を探してみてください。添削するという行為は、深く英語を考察するという事につながりますので、とても良い勉強になります。

I do not think restaurants should stay open 24 hours a day.
I have two reasons.
First, convenience stores sell many things. For example foods, newspaper, daily necessities. So there is demand at convenience store. But there is no demand at restaurants.
Second, shopners are very busy. And owners pay expensive salary for shopner.
For these reasons I do not think restaurants should stay open 24 hours a day.

では文法を見ていきましょう。
【文法】
①First, convenience stores sell many things. For example foods, newspaper,daily necessities.
●for example を文頭に使っても減点にはならないかな？とは思いますがコンマでつないで１文にした方がスッキリしそうです。
●newspaper は可算名詞ですので、ここではnewspapers としましょう。
●物事を羅列するときは、最後には接続詞を入れた方がよいでしょう。A, B and C

②So there is demand at convenience store. But there is no demand at restaurants.
●so を文頭に持ってくるのは、英作文のテストではやめましょう。therefore は文頭で使えますのでこちらにしましょう。
●convenience store は可算名詞なので、ここではconvenience stores としましょう。
●「需要がある」という表現は there is demand~. で表せますので文法的には間違ってはいないのですが、急に「需要」の話がでてくるのは唐突な印象を与えますね。それでも、この形をキープする方向を模索するのであれば、二つの文を一つにまとめてスッキリさせましょう。but を文頭に持ってくるのも、英作文ではやめた方がよいですからね。

③Second, shopners are very busy. And owners pay expensive salary for shopner.
●shopner ってなに？（笑）英作文を書いた子に問いただすと「お店の人」の意味で使っていたらしい。こういう時は一応「なんかに載ってたの？」と聞きます。結構、今時の子は色々な表現をあちこちから検索で引っ張ってくるのでね。すると「自分で作った」とのこと。爆笑。素敵だ。こういう感覚嫌いじゃない！
確かに er をつけると、「～する人」になるもんね。でも、それならshopper だろう。ちなみにshopper は「買い物客」という意味で実在します。お店の人、ではなくて買う側ね。「shop 買い物する＋(p)er人」なんだから「買い物する人」になるわね。それに、ここでは、まずレストランはshop ではないので前提からして違うんだよね。「レストランの人」というか「ウェイターやウェイトレス達」とすれば良いと思います。それと、「とても忙しい」という表現ですが、これは24時間営業していなくても「とても忙しい」可能性はあるので、ここでは適切な表現ではないかもしれません。「一晩中働かなければならない」とすると良いでしょう。
●and を文頭にするのも英作文ではやめましょう。salary は high / low とともに使います。expensive は使えません。salary というと「固定給」のことなので、う～ん、彼らは固定給じゃないかも、とも思いますが英検の英作文でそこまで厳しくはチェックしないかな？と思います。

最低限これならいける！と思いますが、少し表現を変えると「あー、なるほどね。そうだよね。」と納得できる文章になり更に安心して合格点に届くと思います。

◎理由１の部分を見てみましょう
First, convenience stores sell many things, for example, foods, newspapers, and daily necessities. Therefore there is demand at convenience stores but not at restaurants.
●「コンビニで色々なものが売っている。コンビニに需要がある。」という事を言って「だからレストランは24時間あいていなくてもよい」と言いたいのでしょうが、「夜」についての記述がないので２４時間営業の是非について述べているのかどうか分かりにくいです。
→「２４時間あいているコンビニがあちこちにある。何か食べ物が必要な時には、夜遅くでもそこで買える」といって「だからレストランは24時間あいていなくてもよい」という展開にした方が、「うん。そうだ。」となるでしょう。
→First, there are convenience stores which are open 24 hours everywhere. We can buy foods there even late at night when we need something to eat.

これで良いと思いますが、まず「レストランを開けておくことはコストがかかる」とメインポイントを言った方がより分かりやすい作文になると思います。それと、少し単語を難しめにすると「語彙」の部分で点数がもらえるでしょう。
→It is costly to leave restaurants open for 24 hours because employees have to work overnight. The labor cost runs up.
（レストランを２４時間あけておくのは費用がかかる。なぜなら、従業員は一晩中働かなくてはならないからだ。人件費がかさむ。）
